The sisters, originally from Aix-la-Chapelle in Germany, agreed to the new venture. The first St. Elizabeth Hospital was located on 7th Street and was dedicated on January 23, 1861. The parish school opened in 1893 under the direction of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, KY. A new Gothic Revival Church was constructed in 1903-04 and a new school in 1911-1912. The parish operated a high school from 1928-1948.

St. Boniface School (Ludlow's German Catholic congregation) and St. James School were merged in 1967 (this combined school closed in 1984). The two parishes merged in 1980. The facilities of the former St. James Parish are utilized by the merged congregation (the Parish of Sts. Boniface and James).

In 1894 and 1913, St. James' pastor, the Reverend Thomas N. Kehoe, took a general census of his flock. These digitized images comprise this database.

  St. John's Cemetery 1885-2011
St. John's Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery located in Fort Mitchell. The cemetery was established by the St. John's Parish, the third oldest Catholic congregation in the City of Covington. Originally located at the corner of Leonard and Worth Streets, the parish complex was rebuilt on Pike Street in the early 1900s. In 1867, the parish, under the supervision of Father Andreas Michel, purchased a parcel of land on the Lexington Pike (Dixie Highway) in the present day City of Fort Mitchell for use as a cemetery. The cemetery was consecrated on May 19, 1867.

St. John Cemetery developed slowly over the next fifty years. During the pastorate of Father William Tappert (1873-1879) a number of improvements were made at the cemetery. At this time, land was graded, permanent roads were constructed and numerous ornamental trees and shrubs were planted. Also at this time, Father A.M. Meyer, pastor of St. Boniface Parish in Ludlow, constructed a small frame chapel in the cemetery, which was dedicated to Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of "Comforter of the afflicted." St. John Cemetery remained a parish cemetery until the 1960s when it was absorbed by the Diocese of Covington Cemetery System.

The index includes over 10,000 entries of individuals buried in St. John's. The list was scanned and compiled by Rita Steenken in coordination with the cemetery and the Covington library. Any addition, correction, or deletion requests should be forwarded to Rita at rksteenken@zoomtown.com or to the St. John's Cemetery office of the Diocese of Covington at 859-392-1585.

Location: 2201 Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell, Kenton County

History: In 1870, St. Mary Parish (the Cathedral Parish) purchased a 43 acre plot of land on the Lexington Pike (Dixie Highway) for use as a parish cemetery. Bishop Augustus Maria Toebbe blessed the cemetery on July 17, 1870. The property was purchased for $9,500.00. Immediately, steps were taken to layout the lots and to beautify the grounds. Over the next few decades, the cemetery was expanded in size.

St. Mary Cemetery was the first to enter the Diocese of Covington Cemetery System. In addition, the cemetery is the resting-place for all the deceased bishops of Covington (except for Bishop Ferdinand Brossart who is buried at St. Anne Convent Cemetery in Melbourne, KY).
